6,000 SAPO employees to be retrenched

JOHANNESBURG – The Communications Workers Union is slamming a Post Office decision to cut about 6,000 jobs.
It says it hasn’t been thought through and goes against the turnaround strategy.
The union says this decision will effectively kill the Post Office’s network.
It says those dependent on it for social services will suffer.
“We think this is a hasty decision,” said the union’s Aubrey Tshabalala.
“It is not well thought through because cutting off hours of work first and then moving to the total retrenchment of almost everyone in the bargaining sector, 6000 employees, that means that you are just killing the Post Office network.
“It is not a plan that was thought through because the Post Office has a turnaround strategy that talks about the Post Office of the future and it’s something that the board and together with the portfolio committee have given a thumbs-up,” Tshabalala said.
